Choose and trial a password manager

1. List the devices you need, whether you need sharing, and whether automatic sync is necessary.
2. Compare a hosted manager such as Bitwarden with a local vault such as KeePassXC. For a local vault, decide how you will back up and synchronise it before relying on it.
3. Install the official application and create a test vault protected by a unique long passphrase. Store recovery instructions somewhere you can reach without this vault.
4. Add one low-risk login, lock the vault and test unlocking and autofill on your required devices.

Check the result

Confirm you can retrieve the saved login after restarting the app. Test your backup or recovery arrangement before migrating important accounts.

Limits

A vault cannot protect secrets on a compromised device. Recovery capabilities differ; do not assume support can recover a forgotten master password.
