Enable a second factor and test recovery

15–20 minutes · Account password and access to security settings

Reviewed 2026-09-05 · Revision 1

  1. Open the account’s official security settings and review supported second factors. Prefer a security key or passkey when supported and suitable for your devices; otherwise use an authenticator app.
  2. Add the factor and complete the service’s verification challenge. Keep the current session open until testing succeeds.
  3. Save recovery codes outside the device holding your only factor. If the service supports it, register a spare factor.
  4. In a separate browser session, sign in and confirm that the new factor works. Review the service’s recovery instructions without resetting the account.

Check the result

Confirm a second session can sign in and you can locate the spare factor or recovery codes.

Limits
