Evaluate and test a VPN

20–30 minutes · A supported device and a trial or subscription

Reviewed 2026-09-05 · Revision 1

  1. Write down the network problem you need to solve: an untrusted Wi-Fi network, an application connection or network blocking. A VPN is not a universal anonymity tool.
  2. Check the provider’s supported devices, ownership, published audits, logging policy and refund terms. Verify the audit date and scope.
  3. Install its official app and enable the connection. If available, enable its kill switch and test reconnection after briefly disconnecting Wi-Fi.
  4. Open the provider’s connection test. Check the reported exit address and DNS result against the app’s selected connection.

Check the result

Record the connection test result and confirm that your intended application works. This checks routing, not the provider’s logging claims.

Limits

Your VPN provider becomes part of your trust model. Account logins still identify you. Mullvad Browser alone does not provide a VPN connection.
